Since the reason The Travel Bags is on the road full-time is our Christian music mission, we share our monthly updates from Stephen Bautista here.
April Mission News
I feel pretty comfortable walking through the doors of our WELS churches, but it wasn’t always that way. There was a time when I didn’t know Christ as my Savior, and the last place I was about to look to fill the God-shaped hole in my life was a church on a Sunday morning. No thank you.
But all was not lost. God shared the Gospel message with me through a friend who handed me a cassette tape of Christian contemporary music. The music wasn’t as intimidating as a sermon or as confusing as the centuries-old liturgy I have since learned to appreciate. That is one of the reasons I do what I do–to reach others with the soul-saving words of Scripture in a non-intimidating manner, the same way Christ reached me.
This is our seventh year on the road with our full-time Christian music mission. While we love singing during worship services in WELS and ELS churches throughout the country, we also savor the opportunity to perform concerts. Here’s why. Concerts are not intimidating. It’s easy to say to a friend, “Hey, let’s grab a coffee and hit this free concert!” or “Wanna go to a concert with me? There’ll be cookies.”
Throughout our travels we have heard story after story of people who tried unsuccessfully for years to get a friend to church, but they succeeded in bringing them to one of our concerts. The threshold of the church was crossed, but more importantly that person heard the saving Word of God–the seed was planted. What happens after that we don’t always hear, but God is faithful–we obey His command to share the Word and trust Him with the results.
So you see, while “encouraging the found” through worship services is an honor that we don’t take for granted, we still want to follow the other half of our mission statement: “enlightening the lost.” Concerts are the best way we’ve found to do that, and you can help. Consider your community: could your church, local coffee house, or community location host us for a concert? With your help, we can fill our calendar and send the Word into the fertile soil of your community to plant the seeds of salvation.
Let’s do this together!
We’ve been making our way from California eastward (currently in Utah), and will be heading into Wisconsin at the beginning of May. Check the schedule if you want to come to an event, and get in touch if you would like to book an event. Our goal is to book wall to wall all summer long, so get your name in, even for a last-minute booking.
Give it some thought and see how we can partner to answer God’s call to reach his children. Thank you for helping us serve God and His people.
