Emily Rose’s Birthday and Why You Should Teach Your Kids to Cook

Emily Rose turned 15 on March 31, which was also dark Saturday. It was a busy day for us.

First, the girls made from scratch this four layer cake with buttercream frosting roses and hand-dipped tempered chocolate bowls filled with gold coins. They’re very handy in the kitchen and the cake was phenomenal!

Meanwhile, Rebecca made Hannah some double brownies–no sugar, no grains–super delicious!

It was served over Hannah’s lovely ice cream substitute which she created and which you will find on her blog when it launches.

Also, the younger set, from Emily on down, decorated eggs which Elijah boiled according to the no-fail recipe Hannah published right here.

And Elisabeth and Christy made a chicken pot pie with the flakiest pie crust we have ever had ever ever ever! Elisabeth made the pie crust.

Can you see the flake in that crust? It was honestly incredible! Oh yeah, that’s butter in there. Good ol’ brain-building butter. Grin! Also drool.

The recipe for the pot pie (although not the crust, since we go that on a little scribbled piece of paper in our family cookbook) is from Jan Karon’s Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader {affiliate link} which I adore.

Now listen up parents!

I want to talk a little bit about 23-year-old me (that’s Christy me, not anybody else me). One thing I did when my kids were brand new was include them in everything I did to manage a home. No, they weren’t paying bills, but they were listening to my budget talk, strapped on when I pushed a vacuum, and sitting in the kitchen when I was cooking. From the time they could sit, they were watching; from the time they could stand, they were stirring and scooping; from the time they could hold a plastic knife without ramming it down their throats they were cutting bananas.

By ages seven, eight, and nine, my kids could bread and fry pork chops, bake bread from scratch, make homemade ice cream, bake pies from scratch, and figure out pretty much anything else that needed to be done. Why? Because they learned alongside of me from the very beginning.

Did it take longer? You betcha! Was it messier? You know it! Was it worth it? Without a doubt!

Remember this?

Two days later relatives were still talking about how amazing that cake was…because it was…because my kids are amazing in the kitchen!

When I hear parents say that they don’t want their kids in the kitchen because it’s too stressful, messy, and time-consuming, I cringe. Parents, you are intentionally handicapping your child’s future. While navigating a job, possibly a family, a home, and all the other adulting skills, that child will have to teach himself what the parents refused to teach–nutritious cooking. Also, that parent will have to continue cooking for that kid for at least 18 years! Why do that to your child, and why do that to yourself?!

Teach your kids to cook.

Then you can give them birthday presents like this cookbook {affiliate link}, and they will make things for you. Grin!
